Open Day on the Penguin Cradle Trail with Wildcare Friends of Penguin Cradle Trail

The Penguin Cradle Trail (PCT) through-walk is an 80 kilometre remote area bushwalk for experienced bushwalkers. Over the 45 plus years since it was established, many thousands of bushwalkers from all over Australia and overseas have traversed and shared the experience of this changing and challenging landscape and all it has to offer. While the complete walk is much more difficult, the Dial Range area offers walks more suited to people exploring the joys of being outdoors or honing their bushwalking skills.

As part of the Coast to Cradle Wild Country community-led vision for a multi-use nature reserve for the Penguin to Cradle Mountain wild landscape, the Wildcare Friends of the Penguin Cradle Trail group (FoPCT) were invited to lead an open day walk on part of the trail.

A keen group of 20 mostly local people joined us for a short walk along the very scenic Keddies Creek in the Dial Range to a junction with a new track put in by the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service (PWS). The day gave people the opportunity to discover more of the extraordinary natural values and scenery to be found in their backyard.

The walk along this section of Keddies Creek passes by a variety of vegetation including many stands of tree fern, (we even found orchids) and eventually flows into the Leven River.

The Leven River and the PCT follow a path through a diverse landscape linking the sea to the mountains. Besides being a Wild Country destination for us, it also has a diverse plant and animal community that call it home.
