This is starting small focussing on the ‘Saving Nature 101’ task of networking and building capacity for the most effective existing groups in pilot regions and assisting them with presenting Nature’s needs and stories beautifully. The next step is to provide support and facilitation for this network of local groups in dreaming big for Nature in their region and garnering the science, networks and strategy needed to bring this big dream to reality.
This program is being led by our program coordinator Dr Phill Pullinger, with support from photojournalist and conservationist Dan Broun, writer Peta Carlyon and environmental journalist and advocate Raz S’alvarita who leads our work in SE Asia with focus on the Philippines. Our most advanced pilot regions are:
Kuno is supporting networks of local partners on Bruny Island, including the Bruny Island Environment Network, Inala Nature Tours and Friends of North Bruny. After having worked together to build an online field guide to Bruny Island’s Natural history, the groups are now dreaming big by thinking about Bruny as a biosphere reserve akin to the Galapagos Islands. Kuno Foundation is providing important background facilitation and support for this work.
Kuno has been working with environmental groups on the Mosman peninsula such as the Mosman Environmental Foundation and the Mosman Parks & Bushland Association to present the ecology of this remarkable headland in the heart of Sydney harbour, and these groups’ conservation efforts, well. We now look to build upon this and help support the groups in dreaming big in conceiving a conservation vision for the headland and harbour.
Environmental journalist Raz S’alvarita is facilitating the development of a Panay Nature network on the mountainous richly biodiverse island of Panay in the Philippines and heart of the Coral triangle. This involves facilitation, networking and support for the people, groups and communities dedicated to Nature on Panay, helping the groups present Panay’s ecology beautifully and dream big about its future.
Chitral is an exquisitely beautiful landscape in NW Pakistan, home to a variety of unique and endangered wildlife, with species such as the Lynx and the Snow leopard. Kuno’s partner in Chitral is wildlife enthusiast, writer and Naturalist Shams Uddin, and with Shams, we seek to broaden this work into a broader network now of the people and groups dedicated to a positive vision for Nature in the region.

The challenge is to dream big for the future of life on Earth, to build ambitious landscape scale thinking for the conservation of Nature, and to back this with mapping, science, and a strategic program of small, medium and larger long-term grants targeted at the most effective local groups to build their capacity to deliver.
The conservation stories program focuses on providing practical support, skills, training and expert help to these local people and groups to present their place or issue and their conservation work well.
The Kuno Foundation’s Kids & Nature program seeks to support local communities, people and group engaged in promoting childhood connection with, understanding about and commitment to Nature. This has started with a beautiful project that has evolved out of our work with the school, teachers and community groups on Bruny Island – the Bruny Kids & Nature page.
